Common Symptoms and Causes of Automatic Transmissions

Automatic transmissions often give clear signals when a fault occurs. Ignoring them can lead to costly repairs. Some of the most common symptoms include:

• Shocks or jerks when shifting gears – may indicate worn clutches or problems with the hydraulic block.
• Delayed shifting or slipping gears – possible internal wear or insufficient hydraulic pressure.
• Unusual noises – often occur due to worn bearings or the torque converter. Oil leaks – a sign that the gearbox seals are damaged.
• Error displays on the dashboard (e.g. on DSG gearboxes) – may indicate faults in the transmission computer, in which case it needs to be repaired or replaced. An error message (text or symbol) may appear on the dashboard, indicating that the transmission control module (TCM) has detected a serious fault. In this case, a diagnosis is required at a specialized service. Often, the gearbox goes into emergency mode, operating only in one gear or in a limited number of gears.

2. Dismantling and checking:
   inspection of internal components.
3. Repair or replacement:
   defective parts reconditioned or exchanged.
4. Final adjustments:
   Static and dynamic adjustments of the gearbox, clutch or mechatronic parameters.
5. Final road test:
   ensuring correct operation before handover.
