Reconditioning Torque Converter

The torque converter is the component that connects the engine to the automatic transmission. It ensures smooth starts, proper power transfer, and driving comfort. When this component begins to wear, the symptoms are often mistaken for internal transmission faults.

At Automatico, we recondition torque converters using controlled processes, specialized equipment, and rigorous inspections, ensuring the transmission operates correctly and reliably again.

Common symptoms of a faulty torque converter:

  • A worn or defective torque converter can cause issues such as:
  • vibrations when starting from a stop or at low speeds
  • slipping during acceleration
  • metallic noises or whining at certain RPMs
  • overheating of the automatic transmission
  • rapid contamination of ATF fluid with metal particles

Ignoring these symptoms can lead to damage to other transmission components.

Main Steps of Reconditioning

1. Disassembly and Initial Inspection

The torque converter is disassembled and inspected visually and technically. We identify wear on the lock-up clutch, the condition of the blades, and any deformations or cracks.

2. Cleaning and Reconditioning of Internal Components

All internal components are professionally cleaned. Worn or defective parts are replaced, including the friction materials of the lock-up clutch.

3. Reassembly and Precision Welding

The converter is reassembled and welded using specialized equipment, ensuring perfect sealing and correct operational balance.

4. Testing and Final Inspection

Each reconditioned converter is tested for sealing, balance, and proper operation before installation. Only after this stage is the unit considered ready for use.

Why Proper Reconditioning Is Important

An improperly reconditioned converter can contaminate the ATF fluid and cause serious transmission faults, even after a full repair. Therefore, reconditioning must be considered an integral part of the transmission repair, not an optional step.

At Automatico, the torque converter is treated as a critical component for the durability and comfort of the automatic transmission.

When Reconditioning the Converter Is Not Enough

Sometimes, the converter is only the effect, not the main cause of the problem.

There are cases where the symptoms seem to indicate a faulty torque converter, but its wear is the result of a larger issue within the automatic transmission. Incorrect hydraulic pressures, mechatronic unit failures, or repeated ATF contamination can quickly affect even a properly reconditioned converter.

That’s why at Automatico, we always evaluate the converter in the context of the entire transmission operation. This approach prevents installing a reconditioned part in a system that could cause the same faults again.

TORQUE CONVERTER REPAIR WARRANTY

The warranty for a reconditioned torque converter is 1 year or 100,000 km.

    FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Have a question? Here you will find answers to the most frequently asked questions.

Can a faulty torque converter affect the entire automatic transmission?

    Yes.
A worn torque converter, especially the lock-up clutch, can contaminate the ATF with particles of friction material and metal. These impurities circulate throughout the transmission and can affect the hydraulic block, valves and mechatronic components. That is why at Automatico we treat converter reconditioning as an essential part of the health of the entire automatic transmission.

Is reconditioning the converter enough to solve the problem?

    Not always.
In some cases, converter failure is the result of another problem in the automatic transmission, such as incorrect hydraulic pressures or internal wear. Therefore, before reconditioning, we perform a complete evaluation through electronic diagnostics and ATF analysis to ensure that the recommended intervention is correct and durable.

Why is it essential to test a torque converter after reconditioning?

    For long-term safety and reliability.
A converter that is not properly tested can cause vibrations, overheating or rapid contamination of the ATF oil after installation. At Automatico, each reconditioned converter is checked for leaks, balancing and correct operation so that it can be safely installed and operated under real operating conditions.
